(April 24, 2004)
At approximately 0649 hours, units from Leesburg Fire (Tanker 1, Truck 1, Deputy Chief 1 in Command 1), Ashburn Fire (Quint 6), Hamilton Fire (Wagon 5), Loudoun Rescue (A13-2), and BC2 responded to a structure fire at the Mobil gas station at 615 East Market Street. Deputy Chief 1 (Marty Mantell) arrived first and discovered a well-involved pickup that had struck a gas pump. DC-1 had "Market Street Command". Tanker 1 arrived next and put a quick knock on the fire.
Truck 1's crew laddered the roof canopy to check for extension. From a ground ladder, they cut an access hole into the side of the canopy to check for fire in the void areas of the roof.
Wagon 5 was redirected to Station 20 to provide fill-in coverage for Leesburg. Quint 6 assisted with overhaul and cleanup.
Units remained on the scene for approximately an hour, then the scene was turned over to the Loudoun County Fire Marshall's office for investigation. Leesburg Police are investigating the accident portion of the call and may file charges against the driver.
No injuries occurred.
Heavy smoke shrouds a pickup truck that collided with a gas pump, setting off a fire. Note the fire in the canopy of the gas island.
The picture is a little blurry, but fire is clearly visible in the engine compartment of the truck. Quick work by the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company made sure a bad situation didn't get worse.
This angle shows just how hard the impact was. The gas pump is almost knocked off the gas island. Fortunately, the staff at the gas station quickly hit the emergency shutdown for the pumps.
Co. 1 FF/EMT Anthony Jackson continues the attack.
Truck 1 laddered the "canopy" to check for extension. A hole was cut into the side to ensure that no fire had extended into the void areas of the canopy.
While the interior of the truck is destroyed, the amount of material remaining in the cab is testimony to how fast the fire was extinguished. Many times in vehicle fires, there are no traces of foam or upholstery left behind.
The rear passenger compartment of the truck shows significant damage.
Another view of the scene. The driver of the truck was very lucky to escape uninjured. Leesburg Police are investigating and charges may be filed.
